Heritage and history. There's nothing better than being whisked away and taken to a little piece of American history. That's exactly what I found when I visited New Bern, NC and because it was close enough we popped over to Beaufort as well.
Both quaint little towns nestled in the south. The people were friendly, the scenery great and the food, oh so good. The trees are laden with peat moss and it gently swayed in the wind like ghosts.
That's the main reason why I'm not keen to it, however, I do love a good historical cemetary and New Bern and Beaufort both had one. I laughed when my friend, Andrea raised an eye brow when I told her we had to stop if we passed one along our travels, however, I wasn't surprised to see her strolling along the old tombstones, reading and taking in another bit of history.
Another thing that was very interesting was the bears. Bear, bears everywhere. I couldn't figure out what was with all of the bears. I couldn't get a clear understanding until I did a little digging on my own. New Bern was settled in 1710 by Swiss and Palatine German immigrants. Bern in Swiss means bear. Ah ha! So there you have it.
And did I tell you that Beaufort, NC was established in 1709. Such old charm and what a great water front. Lastly but definitely not least, New Bern is the home to Pepsi Cola. Yum!
I can't wait to return. There is so much to see and so many places to visit. we just didn't have enough time.
